Preaching to the Unconverted

Sometimes it’s tough being an agent of change. There’s the natural resistance to change we all have because we really don’t like it when our comfort level fluctuates even the slightest bit. Then there’s the tendency to resist things like technological change. Can you believe that there are actually people out there who still refuse to use a computer or cell phone? Really. I’ve seen them.

I know what you’re thinking, but no, they’re not living in caves somewhere in the mountains of China. Actually, if they were living in the mountains of China, they’d probably have a better wireless signal than I have here at home and a broadband connection would be easier to get than FiOS in my neighborhood. But I digress.

I’ve always said that working the change thing is much like hacking your way through the bush with a machete to reach the natives. You really hope they’ll take the book you hand them and read it. That’s what I call “preaching to the unconverted.” This is good.

But when you finally hack your way through the bush and reach the village and the natives look at you kind of funny, grab the book and burn it, this is “preaching to the unconvertable.” This is not so good.

So do yourself a favor and increase your chances of success by enlisting champions who can help you preach the gospel of change to the unconverted. With a solid understanding of your target audience and the right message, people will latch on to that book faster than a dollar beer at happy hour.
